First Day in the Pharmacy

Updated: Jun 24, 2019

Aye yai yai...

I don’t even know where to start.

Well, today was my first official day in the pharmacy and let me tell you, I had no previous experience nor idea of what possibly I could have been getting myself into besides googling the job description and applying on the company website in dire need of a new job with reasonable pay to meet my qualifications and previous work experience.

Monday, I had my oriention training after class which was basically a virtual reality of a pharmacy. We performed simulations and poured skittles onto this machine call an eyecon where it’s accurately counts the medication for you by weight, shape, and size.

It was fun!! But today... I'm not sure fun is a descriptive enough word.

First I was so anxious throughout the day to finally start, I couldn’t even pay attention in my genetics class and we were supposed to be reviewing for the final exam which is next week (which I’m not ready for). Anyway, I left class 15 minutes early hoping I could have enough time to eat and get dreased and pack my lunch. I was so worried about having all transparent items because they emphasized how many people lost their jobs from not following protocol and stealing drugs—so me being me, made sure everything I had was transparen. Trust me from the jump. I’m the only black person and black girl in that entire pharmacy too.

Anywho, I made it to work right at 1, getting nervous I wasn’t sure if I’d have to write in my arrival time hoping I wouldn’t be tardy on my first day. Just to find out I had to clock in with my newfound badge at the striking time of 1:02pm

solid. I was late on my first day, not to mention, nobody but the pharmacist acknowledged my existence. Everyone was that busy and I guess didn’t know the new girl would be coming today.

Long story short, it was a lot of commotion and everybody running around with their heads cut off and as for me. Well, I learned how to make childrens liquid medicinea, fill prescriptions, register insurances and file prescriptions, how to write and read new sigs, find medications, find prescriptions, check customers out, look patients up, and provide excellent speedy customer service. Of course I have more ways to go, but the pharmacist himself said I was the best thus far and hopes I become a part of the team. I was told it‘s never this busy, but I Doubt it lol. We’ll see how this next day goes. Maybe better, maybe worst.

I just want to pay attention to my stress levels and water intake honestly!! I’ll keep y’all updated. Thank you for reading. This post was made short due to HIPPA.
